Before you put a single dollar into any stock, look at it four ways: Business model, Leadership, Competitive advantage and Valuation. That's the BLCV framework, a simple checklist that keeps you honest before you buy.

This is Episode 03 of the N0S Investor Mindset series. The idea is straightforward.

B, L and C tell you how good the business is.

V compares what it's worth with what the market is asking you to pay.

A great business at a bad price disappoints. So does a fair price on a weak business.

You need both a great business and a fair price, and BLCV is built to check for each.

The framework, letter by letter

  • B: Business model. Margins set the ceiling on long-term returns, and capital-light businesses compound.
  • L: Leadership. Integrity comes first, then founder and insider ownership, then disciplined capital allocation.
  • C: Competitive advantage. Look at mindshare, pricing power, switching costs and what the 10-K says about rivals.
  • V: Valuation vs. price. Steer clear of both the overpriced compounder and the cheap value trap.

3 red flags to watch for

  1. Dilution growing faster than earnings
  2. Small caps with no proven profit
  3. Earnings without cash flow
